“Praying is what has
brought us old people through life. We've all gone through hard times. We've
all done our share of bad things. But through our prayers and faith in the
Creator we get together again and we try hard to live right."

Here
are thousands of men and women, worldly indeed. They flatly declare that since
they have come to believe in a Power greater than themselves, to take a certain
attitude toward that power, and to do certain simple things, there has
been a revolutionary change in their way of living and thinking. In the face of
collapse and despair, in the face of total failure of their human resources,
they found that a new power, peace, happiness, and sense of direction flowed
into them.

Those
of us who have come to make regular use of prayer would no more do without it
than we would refuse air, food, or sunshine. And for the same reason. When we
refuse air, light, or food, the body suffers. And when we turn away from
meditation and prayer, we likewise deprive our minds, our emotions, and our
intuitions of vitally needed support. As the body can fail its purpose for lack
of nourishment, so can the soul.
