I have nothing bad
hidden in my breast at all, everything is all right there. When Indians get a
little liquor they get drunk and fight sometimes, and sometimes they whip me,
but when they get sober they are all right.

Here
is the fellow who has been puzzling you, especially in his lack of control. He
does absurd, incredible, tragic things while drinking. He is a real Dr. Jekyll
and Mr. Hyde. He is seldom mildly intoxicated. He is always more or less
insanely drunk. His disposition while drinking resembles his normal nature but
little. He may be one of the finest fellows in the world. Yet let him drink for
a day, and he frequently becomes disgustingly, and even dangerously
anti-social.

It
is plain that a life which includes deep resentment leads only to futility and
unhappiness. To the precise extent that we permit these, do we squander the
hours that might have been worth while. But with the alcoholic, whose hope is
the maintenance and growth of a spiritual experience, this business of
resentment is infinitely grave. We found it is fatal. For when harboring such
feelings we shut ourselves off from the sunlight of the Spirit. The insanity of
alcohol returns and we drink again. And with us, to drink is to die.
